Working with urban youth requires patience, respect, and understanding. Street-Level is staffed by a team of dedicated media artists and educators who believe deeply in the power of art to influence and change our communities.

Currently, Street-Level is hiring for the following position:

Media Arts Mentor
Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program
Part-Time, June 18–August 11

The Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program (SAAP) is an eight-week media arts internship for media-savvy youth ages 14-18. Youth apprentices work one-on-one with mentors in video, audio/music, digital photography, and graphic design to create compelling artistic responses to a central theme. This year’s theme is Reality, Rules, and Rebellion.

SAAP meets Monday–Thursday, 10AM–3PM and includes classroom learning, media lab time, studio workshops, field trips, collaboration, and one-on-one mentoring from professional and young adult media artists. SAAP culminates with a media arts installation and gallery show for family, friends, and fans of Street-Level Youth Media. 

Mentors serve as artist-collaborators with youth apprentices and facilitate production of smaller works and final projects. Mentors teach, inspire, and are fully engaged in the creative process from inception to completion. Mentors commit at least 10 hours per week and report to the SAAP Lead Artist and Street-Level's Director of Education. Mentor stipend: $1,400. 

Mentor Expectations

  • Commit at least 10 hours per week for 8 weeks
  • Collaborate with youth and facilitate their artistic development
  • Oversee production and completion of weekly and final projects
  • Help complete final installation

Mentor Qualifications

  • Experience/interest in mentoring teens
  • B.A. or better in media arts or related field
  • Specialize in one or more media art forms 
    • VIDEO: camera operation, video editing, DVD authoring (green screen a plus)
    • AUDIO: composition, recording, mixing, software (Reason, ProTools, FL Studio, etc.)
    • PHOTO: composition, software (Photoshop, etc.)
    • GRAPHIC DESIGN: composition, software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc.)
  • Sculpture / installation experience a plus
