Neutral Ground

Neutral Ground, Street-Level's Multimedia Center in Humboldt Park, offers after-school and summer programs to youth. All workshops are open to any Chicago youth between the ages of 8 and 22, and are provided free of charge. Street-Level offers various media production workshops.

Summer Schedule

Ableton
Monday 1-3 pm
Instructor: Chris Lee

Want to create your own sounds, remix your favorite song, or create mash-ups? If so, come to our advanced audio production workshop where we will explore the use of Ableton Live, production software that is used for music recording, producing, remixing and live performance. Youth will learn the basics of Ableton Live and apply their skills to edit, compose, and remix music.

Live Wire
Monday & Wednesday 4-6 pm

Be on TV and make a difference in your community! Live Wire is a television/ video production workshop that enables youth to create videos on topics they care about. Through this workshop, youth will learn basic skills in planning, producing, and editing original video content. By the end of the workshop, youth will create a “video magazine” to be broadcast on CAN-TV and Internet outlets.

Musicology I
Tuesday & Thursday 1-3 pm

Are you tired of the music you hear on the radio? Do you think you can create something more original? Then join us in Musicology, an introduction to the world of music technology and digital music production. Gain hands-on experience in digital music composition using GarageBand and other basic software. You will also learn the basic foundations of music production and explore the different roles in the music industry.

Stories in Motion Tuesday & Thursdays 4-6 pm
Instructor: Jeneba Koroma

In Stories in Motion, youth will apply their natural storytelling skills to create an animated video using cut paper and 2-D stop motion techniques. You will learn basic animation techniques as well as video production and editing skills to make your stories come alive!

Sounding Point
Wednesday 1-3 pm
Instructor: Andrei Heward-Mills

Sounding Point teaches youth the basics of digital audio pre-production, production, and post-production. From writing interview questions to recording and editing their own original audio pieces, youth will create projects that explore significant events in their communities. Podcasts created during the workshop will be broadcast on the internet and through Vocalo.org!

Open Studio
Monday-Thursday 12-1pm, Friday 12-3pm
Instructor: Steve Evans

Street-Level will be open every day from 12 pm-1 pm Mondays through Thursday, and from 12 pm–3 pm on Fridays for any youth who want to work on media art projects. Youth interested in producing music, editing video, or working on graphic design are welcome to participate during this open studio time.

 

Workshop Enrollment: Youth are accepted into workshops on an ongoing basis although some workshops may reach capacity and be closed to new enrollees.
